TOWN FOOD

Most Japanese from outside Hokkaido agree that they’ve never enjoyed such fresh squid, fatty tuna, enormous scallops and succulent sea urchin elsewhere in Japan. The availability of fresh, reasonably priced seafood and produce are two of the most appealing aspects of visiting Iwanai. The low water temperature and rough currents of the surrounding waters nurture sea life by toning muscle and adding layers of fat, producing some of the tastiest seafood in the country. If you think you don't like seafood, give it another shot here in Iwanai.

But Iwanai’s cuisine is not all about seafood; the town is home to a wide variety of local eateries, ranging from okonomiyaki and yakitori to burgers and pizza. Oh, and there is never a shortage of super local izakayas, which serves small dishes a la carte. So while you explore the coast, be sure to stop by some of these magical establishments and see why Iwanai food is so special.

SUSHI

Iwanai and the neighboring Shakotan Peninsula are home to a treasure trove of aquatic delights, most notably the sea urchin, squid, salmon, abalone and cod.  The availability of this premium catch has led many of the top sushi chefs in the region to set up shop here.

More than its freshness, the finest sushi requires the touch and attention to detail of a master.  Sit at the counter and let one of Iwanai’s master chefs deliver a carefully choreographed melody of seasonal delicacies as you wonder how such seemingly simple food could be so rich in flavor.  We know you came for the powder but it's indeed a shame to leave without having a taste of our sushi.
