Wondering when is the optimal time to secure your CAT tour?
Beat the rush by booking early! Our tour schedule fills up quickly, especially during peak season. For those craving an exclusive mountain experience, we recommend reserving your spot at least a year in advance. Planning an extended getaway or a private CAT excursion? Aim to book 7-10 months before your desired visit. Proactive planning pays off, especially as our availability dwindles rapidly. To ensure you get the dates you want, we suggest securing reservations 6-7 months beforehand.
Mark your calendar for peak season dates, as they fill up fast. Considering a later-season adventure? March onwards offers more flexibility for spontaneous snow-bound outings. Don't delay—book now and create unforgettable memories on the mountainside!
Peak Season Dates:
December 20th – January 5th
January 21st to February 28th
The Lunar New Year
Can my kid CAT ski?
All participants under the age of 16 must have a parent or legal guardian sign our release of liability. All minors must be at least 13 years of age and be accompanied by a guardian or parent. We have welcomed children as young as 8 years old on the CAT. Their ability to participate will be assessed based on their individual capabilities. If they are able to keep up with the other guests, we are more than happy to have them aboard..
Can I change the date of my booking at the last minute?
If you desire to reschedule your booking after payment has been made, we are happy to accommodate your request. However, please note that a fee of ¥10,000 will be charged per seat for the change.
Can I bring my transceiver, probe, and shovel?
Our mountain and the terrain we utilize during our tour pose a very low risk of avalanches. Due to this low risk, we do not require our guests to carry a pack with a probe and shovel and we only ask that you wear an avalanche transceiver, as it is an industry-standard safety measure. If you don't have a transceiver, we provide one for you, but if you have your own backcountry gear, feel free to bring it with you. In the morning, our guides will inspect your equipment to ensure that your transceiver has a sufficient battery and meets the industry standards for safety.
I am concerned that I will hold up the group. What should I do?
Many people have this concern. Please review the terrain/ability page and honestly inform our staff of your ability level. Space permitting, we can add another guide on the CAT to take you to a landscape that suits your ability—no need to worry about holding up others…we have you covered.
What time does the bus return to Niseko?
You'll get off the mountain around 3:30 pm. After a great day of Iwanai powder, our guests enjoy a few celebratory après-ski drinks and perhaps a game of billiards. The departure time depends on the mood of the group but the bus typically departs at 5:00 pm, which means you’ll arrive in Niseko at about 6:00 pm depending on your hotel location. If you need to get back earlier, let our staff know and we can arrange private transportation for you.
Can I bring a camera on the CAT tour?
Yes, no problem! We only ask that you be aware of your group's pace and not slow down others by prioritizing your photography. Also, please refrain from chest-mounting your “GoPro” as it interferes with the avalanche beacon.
Do you have vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free menu items?
Yes, please notify our staff of any food allergies or dietary requirements when you sign up for the tour or when placing your lunch order in the morning. Our kitchen team will strive to make sure that your requirements are met.
What type of ski or board should I bring?
We understand that your visit to Iwanai plays a significant role in your Hokkaido vacation, and having the appropriate gear is crucial. While snow conditions can be unpredictable, we typically encounter deep snow. We recommend using all-mountain skis or boards suitable for various terrains, or gear that you are comfortable with. For simplicity in logistics, please bring only one pair for the day; however, if you prefer to bring multiple pairs, you can switch during the lunch break if necessary.
Our terrain poses a low avalanche risk, so we only mandate guests to wear an avalanche transceiver and helmet for safety. If you do not have your own, we provide one, and our guides will check its battery and safety standards in the morning.
Where do I go when I arrive?
Please arrive at our day lodge by 8:30 AM on the event day. You won't be able to drive up to the building, so park and carry any necessary equipment up the hill. Leave skis or boards on the rack outside and head to the 2nd floor for check-in and briefing on the day's activities.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations 30 days before the event can receive a 100% refund, cancellations 29 to 14 days prior receive a 50% refund and any cancellation less than 14 days prior cannot be refunded. However, you can transfer your booking to another client should you find one. Credit card charges cannot be refunded.
Do I need Insurance?
We recommend that all participants obtain trip cancellation insurance to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances like injuries, transportation issues, or unexpected illness. Additionally, please note that we do not offer refunds for snowcat tours affected by weather-related conditions such as extreme avalanche risks or torrential rain.
Should I tip and how much?
In general, it is not customary to tip in Japan. We do our best to provide a quality powder day without expecting any additional compensation. Guests that insist on leaving a tip do so at their level of generosity and discretion.
Can I leave early?
Yes. If you need to leave early, you can. Be sure to notify your guides and return your safety equipment to the lodge staff before your departure. If you came to Iwanai on the tour bus and wish to depart early, we are happy to arrange a private transfer or taxi service for you.
